How Much is a Haircut at a Salon?
What is the average price of a haircut
Average cost for a haircut can range from $30 – $100. Haircut prices for women average about $43, while a man’s haircut averages $28, according to the Professional Beauty Association, an organization for beauty industry professionals. While that may be the national average, the actual cost of a haircut ranges far and wide depending on location and experience.. A barber at a local mom-and-pop shop may charge as little as $10, while a top-notch hairdresser in NYC can charge $600 or more.
Why a haircut costs so much or so little?
Hair stylists usually offer a wide array of services for different occasions. They may offer cutting, shampooing, and coloring services as part of a standard hair care routine. They may also offer styling services for special events, such as weddings or proms. Oftentimes, stylists offer discounts if large groups of people book services together, such as a bridal party. The costs for each service vary extensively based on many different factors.
1. Hairstylist Education
Surprisingly, beauty school is not cheap. In Texas, a licensed cosmetologist is required to complete 1,500 hours of instruction and clinical experience prior to graduation and completion of the Texas Board Cosmetology Examination. It takes approximately 15 months of full-time cosmetology school to complete these requirements. Final school costs in a state like Texas land around $18,000, which are often funded by student loans, repaid monthly.
2. Rent and Utilities
A location that is properly equipped and licensed by state and local regulation for hair services is required and should be the biggest monthly expense. Some hairstylists work for a company or person, and are paid a commission or salary. Others work for themselves and pay a chair rental fee, studio rental fee, or they buy or rent their own property themselves. Some rental fees include utilities, products, or use of equipment. It all varies for each situation. A typical studio rental fee includes something like: water, trash, heat, and electric utilities, the use of sinks, hydraulic styling chairs, styling stations, a storage cabinet, and a mirror.
3. Licensing & Insurance
Maintaining a valid cosmetology license is very important and a required expense of every stylist and salon owner. A salon license and separate individual cosmetology license is required to be renewed every other year. In order to be eligible to renew your license in Texas, you have to complete 4 hours of continuing education, and pay the associated fees with these hours.
In addition, insurance is important to cover liabilities in a salon or in any business. You never know what may happen when you’re cutting hair, bleaching, styling and it’s important to be covered in case of an accident, theft, fire, or natural disaster.
4. Styling and Washing Supplies
If you are coming to a professional salon, chances are you will want it washed and styled. This requires the use of “backbar” products and supplies. Backbar supplies are the products and tools used by a stylist to wash and style hair during an appointment (shampoo, bleach, color, foil, styling products, towels, capes, etc.) as well as the necessary sanitizing agents required by the state. Now with coronavirus all salons are required to wear masks. Nobody wants to leave the salon looking unkempt. Also notable are laundry expenses, to wash and sanitize the towels and capes regularly.
5. Hair Tools
Styling hair can’t happen without styling tools. Coloring cant happen without foil. As anyone who has gone out of their way to get top of the line tools knows, professional hair dryers, flat irons, curling irons, brushes, bleach, color, and combs are expensive. Professional quality products are important, as they need to have the ability to be the best.
