Detangle Your Hair Without Breakage
Treating your hair and coming to a professional hairstylist is the path to having healthy, shiny, bouncy hair that feels as good as it looks. Whether your hair is straight, thick, curly, long or short, you will almost certainly be subjected to tangles now and then. To say goodbye to irritating tangles and hello to silky smooth hair, here are some steps for a detangle action plan to work and avoid causing more damage.
Your hair will be detangled in no time and without casualties
1. Invest in a wide-tooth comb
Using the right tool is the first step to tackling tangles without creating more damage! If you have fine or damaged hair that is prone to breaking, choose a wide-toothed comb for loosening knots. Use the comb twice a day to tackle or detangle damp or dry hair.
2. Work from the bottom up
Starting from your roots and brushing down causes hair to build up around the knot which in turn causes more damage, hair loss and breakage. Instead, work from the bottom up, sectioning off your hair and gently combing through the knots at the bottom before working your way up to the roots, ensuring that your hair is detangled once you finally give it a final brush.
3. Do not force it
Tearing your brush through an unruly knot can be the equivalent of cutting it off out of frustration and equally as bad. It can be tempting to attack your knot with a brush but holding off and taking your time to detangle your hair will help you avoid tearing your hair out.
4. Use the right hair products
Having good products is equally important as having good tools. Try a good hair oil to help work through the knots and try to avoid anything that is alcohol-based. Dry shampoo and cream conditioners are also helpful in keeping your hair healthy!
5. Start in the shower
Great defense starts in the shower and choosing a great conditioner to be on your team is essential. Let it sit and absorb into your locks and then (against popular belief about combing wet hair) your fingers to gently pull tangles apart and distribute the rest of the conditioner evenly across your hair and scalp. Remember the cardinal rule when trying to detangle your hair, always brush bottom up!
6. Ditch the terry cloth towel
Terry cloth towels can be super soft but they do more damage to your locks if you have curly hair. If your locks are curly, swap it out for a microfiber towel or even an old t-shirt to dry your locks safely.
7. Use a mask for your hair
Not just for dry or damaged hair, treating your to a hair mask once a week can keep it healthy, shiny and bouncy. It will also make your hair stronger and less prone to breakage and tangles. Come on in to the salon for a mask!
8. Get a trim
We know this is recommended every 8-10 weeks but if you skipped your last trim you may want to consider booking an appointment. If your ends are feeling a little frazzled and not behaving then a haircut might be what the hair doctor ordered. It could also help you avoid pesky tangles.
